Remember the childhood rhyme April showers bring May flowers? Flowers are a big part of May Day celebrations. May Day brings maypoles, collecting flowers, and the delight in finding a surprise basket of flowers on your doorstep. Throughout its history, May Day has traditionally been a joyous celebration of spring, femininity, fertility, and the coming summer.

								Many parts of the world celebrate the first day of May:

								    * In Ireland, people sprinkle yellow primroses outside doorways to protect homes from evil spirits, while in Wales, they use hawthorn.

										In Scotland, bannocks are a traditional food, and on May Day they are marked with a cross. Children roll them down the hills. If the cake lands with the cross facing down, it’s considered bad luck.

										Another custom is “maying” or “to go a-Maying.” Maying is simply gathering flowers for May Day celebrations. The verse, “Here we go gathering nuts in May,” is from a popular May Day game referring to gathering knots of flowers. Nuts is a corruption of the word “knot.” In the British Isles, Hawthorn flowers come into blossom at the end of April and are commonly “gathered in knots.”

										In 1644 England, the Puritan leaders banned May Day celebrations because of its ties with pagan traditions. Even so, people still managed to celebrate. The ban was eventually overturned and the celebrations strengthen with the Restoration of England.

										In some parts of Britain, it’s called Garland Day. People collect greenery and make it into garlands. Children parade garlands of flowers fastened to sticks, crosses, or hoops.

										In France, it’s also known as La Fête du Muguet or Lily of the Valley Day. Traditionally, a sprig of lily-of-the-valley is given to loved ones. This flower is considered a lucky charm.

								Today, May Day is celebrated all over Europe and in many countries and in some parts of the United States. In many countries, boys leave maypoles outside their sweetheart’s window.

								American celebrations are sporadic, and many people don’t celebrate it at all. However, Mendon, Utah, has a huge celebration every year. Pennsylvania holds a Faerie Festival.

								ACTIVITIES:

								* Create a May Day Crown (Using flowers You can use artificial since all regions aren't in full bloom yet)

								* Check on Pinterest

								(I'm going to find a few other things to do also)

	Princess Week is almost upon us! Grab those tiaras, and let's celebrate!!

	Everyone is a princess, all the time, in my way of thinking, but it's fun to go all out and actually celebrate it!

	This patch is a week long patch. You can not start it until the 19th, but you can start planning and deciding what kinds of things you would like to do.

	It's also one of the badges you get to decide what activities you want to do to earn it.

	Things you must do, however to qualify:

	* You have to do at least two activities each day. If you can't however, do them both on one day, but have more time on another, you can work in them that way. As long at the end you have at least 12-14 activities finished.

	* Photos CAN be one of those activities. However, not the only one. You can do photos for each day, as one activity, everyday, but you must also do at the least one other.

	Some ideas are:

	* Watch a Princess movie each night/day. Write a small paragraph about - Which movie/show you watched and what you like about it.

	* Princess crafts: Pinterest has tons and for all age levels. Little's or Middle's. Anything you feel like doing, that can be princess related to, is up too you!

	* Tea parties

	* Sing Along

	* Coloring pictures

	Make it special and for you! Cause you're the princess of this story!

	Note: None of the activities you do here, can be transferred and counted towards another badge/patch that you're working on.

	So let's have fun! Enjoy ourselves and make memories!
