The Littles Howl

(Author's Note: This story was requested by one of my closest friends who I met here: Lele. In the time I've known her, she has gone through a lot. Much more than anyone should ever have to go through. Like the wolf pup in this story, she doesn't give up. Even when it is the hardest thing to keep going. I admire her for that. This is for her. - Dean)

(P.S. I appear to have typo'ed the title in the heading. It's The Littlest Howl.)

The Littlest Howl

Howl was born under a full moon. The first thing she did was raise her head to the sky and try to howl. She was too small and too young and hadn’t really learned how to howl yet, but she tried and tried. She made no sound.  Her mother  just smiled at her and named her Howl. Every night, Howl would sit by her mother and howl to the moon. She never made a sound, but she still howled. The moon never noticed her.

A wolf is never accepted until the moon notices them. Howl was the littlest wolf there ever was. She was less than half the size of her brothers and sisters. She would listen to them whine, whimper, bark, and growl. Howl never whined. She never whimpered. Howl never barked or growled. But every night, whether the moon shone in the sky or not, Howl lifted her face to the sky and howled the most silent of howls.

One night, her biggest brother howled. It was a loud, glorious howl. He howled an anthem to the moon and the moon shone it’s light on him. Howl tried her best to howl with him, but no sound came and the moon never looked her way. The next morning, her brother was gone. He was a true wolf now, accepted by the moon. That night, one of her sisters howled to the moon. Her howl was a beautiful aria, soft as a dream, sweet as honey. The moon shined light on her sister, who howled a grateful crescendo. Howl again tried to howl but there was still no sound. Her sister, too, was gone the next day. Night after night, one of Howl’s siblings would howl to the moon. Night after night, the moon shined light upon them. Night after night, Howl would raise her face to the sky and howl her silent howl.

Howl was the only pup left of her litter. Her brothers and sisters were all true wolves now. They had all been accepted by the moon. Howl looked up at the moon. Her mother sat beside her. Howl took a deep breath and howled as hard as she could. She howled and howled. There was nothing but silence. The moon didn’t shine on her. Tears filled her eyes and waterfalled down her face.  She howled through the tears. There was still no sound. Howl howled and howled until she was too tired to howl anymore. The moon never shone it’s light on her. Howl fell asleep. When she awoke, her mother was gone.

Howl was alone. She cried for awhile. She missed her mother. She missed her brothers and sisters. She missed their whining. She missed their whimpering. She missed their barking and growling. Everything was silent. Just like her.

Howl wiped her tears with a paw and made a decision. She would find a way to make the moon hear her. She was the littlest wolf pup but she would be heard. She needed to get closer to the moon. Howl climbed the nearest hill and waited for the moon. Then, she howled and howled until she could howl no more. She fell asleep crying, the moon never having heard her.

Howl refused to give up. She was a wolf. All she wanted to do from the moment she was born was howl. She climbed the next hill, higher than the last, and howled her silent howl through the night. The moon never noticed. Every day, Howl climbed a higher hill. Every night, Howl howled to the moon. Every night, she howled with tears in her eyes. Every night, she fell asleep on a hill, having howled until she could howl no more. Every night, she made no sound. Every night, the moon never noticed her.

Howl found the biggest hill she could find. It took her all day to climb it. When she reached the top, she could see all the other hills where she had howled night after night. Howl waited for night. When the moon came, it was full. Just as it was the night she was born. Howl prepared herself to howl. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and heard a howl. It was glorious. It was an anthem. Howl opened her eyes. Her biggest brother was sitting beside her. He was howling. Another howl joined his. The howl was soft as a dream, sweet as honey. Howl saw her sister on the next highest hill, howling her aria to the moon. Howl’s mother sat down on the other side, smiled at her daughter, and added her voice to the howls of her brother and sister. Suddenly, the night was filled with howling. There were wolves on all the hills. They were all colors and all sizes. There were pups just learning to howl and some falling over from trying too hard. There were very old wolves whose howls were almost over. There were all her brothers and sisters. And there was her mother. All of them were howling. They were not looking at the moon. All of them were looking at her, the littlest wolf pup with the silent howl. The wolves weren’t howling to the moon. They were howling for her.

All the wolves stopped howling. They all still watched her. Her brother nudged her and looked up at the moon. Howl knew it was time for her to howl. This time she would be heard. She took a deep breath and stopped. She was a wolf. She would always be a wolf. She didn’t need the moon to accept her. She just needed to accept herself. She may be the littlest wolf pup, but she was going to howl. Not for the moon. Not for the wolves that surrounded her on all the hills. Howl was going to howl for herself.

Howl looked up to the sky. She closed her eyes. She howled. It wasn’t silent. It was haunting. It was beautiful. It was a song of sorrow and loss. It was anger and determination. It was joy and celebration. It was happiness and frustration. It was filled with tears that were rainbows of emotion. It was love. It flowed across the hills and into the night sky. And the moon heard.

The moon shone its light upon the littlest wolf pup. It smiled at her. The moon opened its mouth. And the moon howled. It howled with Howl. Her brothers and sisters and mother all started howling. All the other wolfs, pups and old wolves and all those between, started howling. They were a wolf choir as Howl sang a duet with the moon. Together, their howls filled the night. They howled through the night. They howled until the moon had to make way for the sun. They howled until they could howl no more.

There had never been a howl like that in all the history of howls.  There may never be a howl like that again. Howl was happy. She knew that it was okay to be the littlest, to be different, to be quieter than the others. She knew it was okay to do what made her happy. She was a wolf. All she wanted was to howl. Every night, Howl would look up into the sky. Every night, Howl would howl. Not to the moon and not for the moon. Howl would howl for herself. At times, she would hear her brothers or sisters or mother howling and she would join her howls to theirs. At times, they would join their howls to hers. It didn’t matter where Howl was. She was never truly alone. There were always howls to fill the night.

Every night, Howl would howl. Some nights, the moon howled with her.
