Question 1: So here we see the Commodore having the men join on the journey to the island and saying he specifically kept the reason from them to avoid mutiny. What are your thoughts on this? Do they deserve to know or is it all part of the job?
I would love to say that they deserve to know but realistically at that time it would have all been part of the job

Question 2: Here we meet an abused boy coming to meet the ship crew. Do you think he was left alive on purpose? Or escaped? Something else? If on purpose any guesses why?
I think he escaped somehow and might come into play later. If nothing else it made me HAVE to keep reading to find out lol

Question 3: Here Lillias coworker is pregnant and therefore makes her clean the bathrooms. Lillian seems gracious about it, what about you? If you were her and not only terrified of bathrooms but also getting the shitty job how would you react?
I am a people pleaser so I would probably do the same

Question 4: OK another guessing question. I wanna hear all your theories about these worm things. What are they? Why do the people who have them go to water? Why the smell? And anything else you wanna add for guesses.
I was thinking that they may have some connection to the island and thats why they draw people to the water and maybe they smell like that because they are muck but I don't know why they would be so sentient. Maybe they access people's memories?

Question 1: So, I see two sides to this. From the commodore's perspective, I can understand his desire to want to avoid mutiny. A ship on the sea is too small a space to control chaos and outrage. As a crew member, I would want to know where and why I am doing a job. I'd at least like the option to keep my pretty ass on the ship when we reached our destination. 😂

Question 2: Okay, so at first, I thought he was like a lone survivor who escaped until he started talking to the crew. Then I was all kinds of confused. If he wasn't left alive on purpose, I suspect he was a hallucination from the commodore. I suspect something supernatural, but that's all I've got for theories so far.

Question 3: I didn't see it as her co-worker making her clean the bathroom as it was she was asking. I feel it was Lillian's choice to clean it. I also suspect the co-worker has no clue about Lillian's trauma and if Lillian was too insecure to tell (I would be considering what happened 😅) then cleaning the bathroom was probably an easier option.

Question 4: I visualized the wormy things to look like those demon blobs from Princess Mononoke... except tiny, I guess? Maybe they're water demons? Either way, I think they need liquid to survive which is why they're in the body (probably drying them out) and then run to water when the host expires.

I think the it really was just status quo for the times. New worlds, uncharted lands and such. I'm assuming this Navy is British, so following into new territories or experiences would have been expected. Also, I think fear, adventure, excitement are motivating to a lot of people, but maybe not before hand. If that makes sense, you want something scary, but you don't want to know you're going to be scared. So, honestly, just a way of keeping order.

Oh! I do love a bit of foreshadowing! My guess would be this "lone survivor" plays a major role in the rest of the story.

The way this part is written, the CO worker seems obvious. Both to Lillian 's past and how it impacts her present. If I had to guess I'd say Lillian learning to use her voice to advocate for herself is going to be a big part of her character arc.(I hope)

I'm picturing moldy swamp. The worms obviously have something to do with transmitting a virus, like real life parasite. It's an island and there's water involved. So I just picture moldy sourness. Which doesn't make cleaning the bathroom sound any better

Ohhhh I hope the lone survivor does play a bigger role!!! I guess in my mind I assumed fleeting character but that could be good if they have a deeper back story

Ok I love your answers to the first because realistically not every person can or will be 100% filled in. And also the chaos it could cause from fear could be dangerous

These are great answers!

Ohhhh I like the theory that they require water to survive!!! Ithink it makes sense and could be an interesting piece of this story if so.

Also interesting thought about the boy maybe being a hallucination especially with the words said towards the end of the chapter

Question 1: I think it would have been great to have been told. But the concept of informed consent was just not historically present at the time, so I understand it. Life on a ship was rigid in power hierarchy in order to control for their worst fear, mutiny and punishments severe. Class lines also came into this, sailors were often aspects of the lower class while the officers on the ship were from the upper class. Lower class, criminals, or even those in the poor house could also be press ganged into serving in a ship.

Question 2: I found this character interesting. Like a harbinger of doom. Was he ever real, one of the many on the island who died with the rest and is also trapped in the madness? Was he just a hallucination? Or some sort of symbolic guide through the “hell” they are all trapped in, as it seems almost like they are stuck in eternal suffering?

Question 3: I think I would struggle to use my voice just like she did. I find it harder to be assertive when it’s someone I care for or can genuinely see their needs (such as the coworker being pregnant)

Question 4: I also thought they may require water or are connected to it in some way. They seem to be some kind of parasite that eventually destroys the host with elements of madness. I suspect we will see that they can drive their host to kill, torture, burn - all kinds of atrocities. I thought about their smell like decay, like they rot their host from the inside out. I also wonder about what drives them, what’s their purpose? Is there a larger controlling element, something they come from? Or are they like hive mind? Is it supernatural or demonic in some way?
