PigtailPrincess Posted November 13 Report Posted November 13 Ok here is where yall can post your answers to my questions each week. I make a point to respond to every one of yall and often our discussion chat meetings will pull from these. Please make sure to spoil them just in case! 1
NickyMoon Posted November 18 Report Posted November 18 Spoiler Question 1: So here we see the Commodore having the men join on the journey to the island and saying he specifically kept the reason from them to avoid mutiny. What are your thoughts on this? Do they deserve to know or is it all part of the job? I would love to say that they deserve to know but realistically at that time it would have all been part of the job Question 2: Here we meet an abused boy coming to meet the ship crew. Do you think he was left alive on purpose? Or escaped? Something else? If on purpose any guesses why? I think he escaped somehow and might come into play later. If nothing else it made me HAVE to keep reading to find out lol Question 3: Here Lillias coworker is pregnant and therefore makes her clean the bathrooms. Lillian seems gracious about it, what about you? If you were her and not only terrified of bathrooms but also getting the shitty job how would you react? I am a people pleaser so I would probably do the same Question 4: OK another guessing question. I wanna hear all your theories about these worm things. What are they? Why do the people who have them go to water? Why the smell? And anything else you wanna add for guesses. I was thinking that they may have some connection to the island and thats why they draw people to the water and maybe they smell like that because they are muck but I don't know why they would be so sentient. Maybe they access people's memories? 1
DaddysCosmicBunny Posted November 19 Report Posted November 19 Spoiler Question 1: So, I see two sides to this. From the commodore's perspective, I can understand his desire to want to avoid mutiny. A ship on the sea is too small a space to control chaos and outrage. As a crew member, I would want to know where and why I am doing a job. I'd at least like the option to keep my pretty ass on the ship when we reached our destination. 😂 Question 2: Okay, so at first, I thought he was like a lone survivor who escaped until he started talking to the crew. Then I was all kinds of confused. If he wasn't left alive on purpose, I suspect he was a hallucination from the commodore. I suspect something supernatural, but that's all I've got for theories so far. Question 3: I didn't see it as her co-worker making her clean the bathroom as it was she was asking. I feel it was Lillian's choice to clean it. I also suspect the co-worker has no clue about Lillian's trauma and if Lillian was too insecure to tell (I would be considering what happened 😅) then cleaning the bathroom was probably an easier option. Question 4: I visualized the wormy things to look like those demon blobs from Princess Mononoke... except tiny, I guess? Maybe they're water demons? Either way, I think they need liquid to survive which is why they're in the body (probably drying them out) and then run to water when the host expires. 1
MissNMTX Posted November 19 Report Posted November 19 Spoiler I think the it really was just status quo for the times. New worlds, uncharted lands and such. I'm assuming this Navy is British, so following into new territories or experiences would have been expected. Also, I think fear, adventure, excitement are motivating to a lot of people, but maybe not before hand. If that makes sense, you want something scary, but you don't want to know you're going to be scared. So, honestly, just a way of keeping order. Oh! I do love a bit of foreshadowing! My guess would be this "lone survivor" plays a major role in the rest of the story. The way this part is written, the CO worker seems obvious. Both to Lillian 's past and how it impacts her present. If I had to guess I'd say Lillian learning to use her voice to advocate for herself is going to be a big part of her character arc.(I hope) I'm picturing moldy swamp. The worms obviously have something to do with transmitting a virus, like real life parasite. It's an island and there's water involved. So I just picture moldy sourness. Which doesn't make cleaning the bathroom sound any better 1

Response: Spoiler Ohhhh I hope the lone survivor does play a bigger role!!! I guess in my mind I assumed fleeting character but that could be good if they have a deeper back story

And also the chaos it could cause from fear could be dangerous 1

Response: Spoiler Ohhhh I like the theory that they require water to survive!!! Ithink it makes sense and could be an interesting piece of this story if so. Also interesting thought about the boy maybe being a hallucination especially with the words said towards the end of the chapter 1
RoseyLittle Posted November 20 Report Posted November 20 Spoiler Question 1: I think it would have been great to have been told. But the concept of informed consent was just not historically present at the time, so I understand it. Life on a ship was rigid in power hierarchy in order to control for their worst fear, mutiny and punishments severe. Class lines also came into this, sailors were often aspects of the lower class while the officers on the ship were from the upper class. Lower class, criminals, or even those in the poor house could also be press ganged into serving in a ship. Question 2: I found this character interesting. Like a harbinger of doom. Was he ever real, one of the many on the island who died with the rest and is also trapped in the madness? Was he just a hallucination? Or some sort of symbolic guide through the “hell” they are all trapped in, as it seems almost like they are stuck in eternal suffering? Question 3: I think I would struggle to use my voice just like she did. I find it harder to be assertive when it’s someone I care for or can genuinely see their needs (such as the coworker being pregnant) Question 4: I also thought they may require water or are connected to it in some way. They seem to be some kind of parasite that eventually destroys the host with elements of madness. I suspect we will see that they can drive their host to kill, torture, burn - all kinds of atrocities. I thought about their smell like decay, like they rot their host from the inside out. I also wonder about what drives them, what’s their purpose? Is there a larger controlling element, something they come from? Or are they like hive mind? Is it supernatural or demonic in some way? 1
Zina Posted Saturday at 12:40 PM Report Posted Saturday at 12:40 PM Question 5: Spoiler Maybe he did see the worms, but he was super traumatized that his brain is the one who blocked that reality and tried to convince Lilia with that. Orrr, I'm thinking since the autopsy said it's a subside, then someone must have faked it to keep the real cause of death a secret. And maybe that someone, idk, payed or threatened Conner to keep what he saw a secret as well. 🤷🏻♀️ Question 6: Spoiler I think we're definitely gonna see more of the douchebag Angelo. He's not gonna leave Lilia alone. Maybe he gonna follow her to Dracadia somehow and start causing problems. Or maybe he gonna cause problems with Lilia's sister to force her to come back. Question 8: Spoiler I've heard about some manipulative parasites who messes up the brain section responsible of fear, so the host loses its inate fear of predators and so they're more likely to be eaten. Therefore, the parasite gets passed on to the next host. Maybe it's the same here. They make the human paranoid and aggressive so they can attack others and somehow pass the parasite to them. 1
DaddysCosmicBunny Posted Monday at 06:55 PM Report Posted Monday at 06:55 PM We can spoil in here, right? If not, let me know and I’ll edit! Q5: I get the vibe that Conner is just oblivious. He feels like such an average Joe type and would need to “see it to believe it”. Since he didn’t see the wormies, he can’t be convinced they’re real, but he can see a coroner’s report so it “has to be fact”. Q6: Lilia should have stabbed Angelo 😤 I know that wouldn’t have helped her situation, but he has the ickiest vibe/personality. I hope she does get a chance to kick his ass. While I wish this was the end of him, I’m sure his creep self will be back. Connor seems to be dependent on him and I suspect Angelo will get them caught up in some illegal nonsense in the near future. Q7: Professor Wilkins seemed odd from the beginning. Even more so when it was revealed he also went to Dracadia. Like, Lilia has a point: why is he teaching at a community college if he went to such a prestigious school?? I find him suspicious and like a potential “recruiter” for new students for Dracadia. Either way, it felt to me like he was hiding something. What it was, I have no idea, but the fact that he sent her paper to the school and she was automatically accepted (all without her knowledge) raises questions for me. Q8: Honestly, the medical/scientific terms kinda go over my head, but I still think the wormies thrive with water/fluid so they “dry out” the host. Maybe it’s dehydration that causes paranoia and aggression? It’s the best theory I’ve got so far. 🤷🏽♀️
MissNMTX Posted Monday at 08:51 PM Report Posted Monday at 08:51 PM Spoiler Question 5: Connor gives me creep vibes. Not as overly as Angelo, but definite creep. I think he for sure knows more than he's letting on. How much I'm not sure, but I definitely think he saw more and knows more. The problem is that he can't make sense of it so the corners report gives him a story that makes more sense....an easy out. Spoiler Question 6: Angelo is a leech. He seems the type to glob on to people who need him(Connor) and then draw them in deeper....I can't wait to see what trouble he brings. I know that Lila will get her moment. I'll be all here for it when it comes! Spoiler Question 7: I have a feeling Professor Wilkins is a crux of the whole thing. Recruiter, keeper of information and secrets. The puppet master. I can't wait to see how his role develops.....I'm thinking secret society grand master. Spoiler Question 8: Most bugs and parasites feed on blood or water.... even mosquitoes. Seems to me these worms are literally sucking the life out of their hosts. Plus, worms in your brain, could you imagine the effects... yikes!

I mean her mother may have been resisting alot at the end whereas some may not.

Can't wait to find out more.
