haven_seeker Posted March 8 Report Posted March 8 hiiiii my name is haven. My pronouns are she/ella/她. my native language is Cantonese. I grew up in the states but my parents are mostly monolingual so i grew up speaking Canto. My second language is English. i don’t know if it counts but i took three years of French in high school. i can still read and write and say some things in French. i also went to mandarin school as a kid. So i can read and understand mandarin. Mandarin is considered to be easier than Cantonese since mandarin only has four tones and canto has nine. i also spent the last eight years learning and still learning Spanish from Yucatán, Mexico because my daddy’s parents are monolingual and i want to be able to talk with them. i can read and write better than i can speak tho. i can order food, say some phrases, and read the newspaper in Vietnamese. i like to look through the classifieds of the Saigon times newspaper. My parents’ nationality was Vietnamese but they consider their ethnicity to be Chinese, meaning they grew up in Vietnam but are culturally Chinese and speak multiple dialects of Chinese. i had to secretly learn Viet here and there since my parents didn’t want me to learn at all. I consider myself only fluent in Cantonese and English. 1
