About This Club

This is a club for anyone that is interested in learning another language while learning about different cultures.

@Onasunbeam I've used Duolingo for a few years, supplemented by Jisho.org to study kanji, and generally reading and hearing Japanese words I come across. This is all done pretty casually, so I'm not as well-practiced as I should be, but I can form basic sentences. It's great to watch anime and actually understand a few words. 😏 Learning another language really gives you a whole new perspective on the world.

What are you all using to study? I'm out of school so I'm doing WaniKani (currently Lvl 5) and Duolingo (Section 1, Unit 2) every day, plus watching shows in Japanese. I found that Rilakkuma and Kaoru on Netlfix is great for learning. I've watched it like three times over now haha
  4. Personally I enjoy learning from pimsleur for listening in the backgrounds like when walking sleeping cooking, etc, then I found duolingo app is also great an it’s free and teaches you how to spell, write and also offering Rosetta Stone, they also offer flash cards an a few learning games an matching an quizzes trying to keep you entertained while learning, and you can make friends with others learning it also an communicate with them they have a little community you can practice with other students, then khanacademy.com which also has an app is also great for getting more practice an offering different approaches to learning to speak Korean, and I found listening to music and watching Tv shows in Korean an reading it in either romanization (which is spelling it out as how you should pronounce the words then a simple translation) or just subtitles in English can also help you learn as your watching it pronounce it how they are an seeing how they distribute the emotions they protray on each word also. viki.com is a great free app for Korean shows an they also stream hits of their channel through Netflix, Hulu an Disney. also you can check out your local library a lot of public free library’s offer free language tutors an classes and if they have it’s for esl they likely can find someone to bounce off with someone you can help with English while they help you learn to conversation in their language ie korean, Hopefully that helps and best of luck, so that’s what I have used to practice writing in hangul and learning to understand Korean, I learned communication more with sign language an body language in Korean then just talking orally but those were the platforms I used to practice on my own inbetween school so I’m yeah I think it could be helpful.
  5. Can we have a tab for German? I'm learning with Duolingo, but luckily my daddy speaks German too, so it's made things easier and make more sense asking him for help when I don't understand something. I'd love any extra help I can get though, and I'd love to learn more about the culture!
  6. I was born in South Korea, but I was adopted and came to America when I was seven and a half months old. I've always wanted to learn how to speak it, but other than a few words, I've struggled doing it on my own. I wanted to take it in college, but there was only one teacher and I heard she was super mean, especially to Asians because she assumes we're taking the class for an easy A.
  7. ¡Buenos días muchachitas y muchachitos! ¡Hablo español desde hace más de veinte años ahora! @Lil_Bear That's quite fitting for the first post in this thread. Thanks for sharing. It also reminded me of the pottery practice of 'kintsugi', which means something like 'gold patchwork'. Katakana: キンツギ Hiragana: きんつぎ Kanji: 金継ぎ This is when broken plates, pots, and others are reassembled using melted gold or silver. It creates a unique aesthetic where the cracks are highlighted with gleaming precious metal. The idea is that the pottery was once shattered but is now whole again, and that its exposed flaws make it more beautiful than ever. I feel that's something that many people here will appreciate.
  9. Tú hablaste muy bien Lizzie yo estoy en una clase de español ahora, así que es más fácil para mí. Y gracias Señor Frijol - me gusta mucho el nombre "gato de las nubes", yo debo usarlo en el futuro para mi "username" en vez de Cloudcat Yo espero que tu día fue bien y tú puedes relajarse por esta noche
  10. Русский язык!! я немного говорю по-русски.. (Russian Language! I speak some Russian.) it would be fun to drag up the rusty Russian I learned as a young’n over there if there are any other native speakers here. 🙂

    Hi!

Nice to meet you hopefully you enjoy and if you have any suggestions please share
  20. I am princess and I’m overall new to this forum!! Was super excited to see you guys have a club for languages! I grew up learning a mix of Spanish and English although I forget a lot of Spanish. I’ve always wanted to relearn what i forgot! I also know a little Ukrainian but that was something I decided to take up on Duolingo. There’s a lot of Ukrainian people in the city I live in and I like to make interactions with them. I also know ASL pretty well. I’m not in the Deaf community but have attended a few events since I am friends with some deaf people. I’m hoping to get my certification 🤞🏼 During my last semester I really wanted to take Italian or Mandarin but couldn’t fit it in my class schedule. So would be open to learning those or just about anything! Nice to meet you all!
  21. I wanted to add something but I was not sure what would be interesting to share. I thought about it a lot and given the forum and how people come here to find connections I would share a Japanese word/saying that is all about the inevitable connection. Koi No Yokan (恋の予感) although there is no direct English language translation it can roughly be translated into “premonition of love”. It is also the name of the American band Deftones seventh album but all it share is the name haha but in description it is used to describe the sense a person has upon meeting another person, the future love between them is inevitable. This is not the same thing as “love at first sight”. An example would be like, “Your smell was never unfamiliar”.

    ni hao! ~hello

Hi and welcome to the club. We added a Chinese section, maybe a few more members will join that are interested in learning the language. I love the culture and who doesn't love the food ?
  23. hello I'm Ella and I've been slowly learning a bit of mandarin by myself! I am really interested in China's history and culture. I also love watching Chinese dramas so I honestly learn a lot from that too. I think I can probably understand a bit more than I could say. I actually visited China when I was younger and really liked it there and would love to go back again someday! I've bought some textbooks and used some apps but I haven't kept up with it regularly.
  24. salut salutt comment vous allez ?
  25. I created a couple more sections and put your tabs in those. I figured with the number of littles we have that love KPOP we needed Korean for sure. Also if anyone wants to start learning Romanian shoot me a message. I have the first 30 units of the Pimsleur program I can "loan" you. I would post them here but I'm pretty sure they would not like me giving away their product lol.
