The home nation's World Cup got off to a good start last night. Scotland's campaign saw them score the first goal with a strike from Aston Villa captain John McGinn sealing a win against good opposition from Haiti who came close on a few occasions. It was the first time for 44 years that Scotland won their first game at the World Cup, and celebrations from the fans in the crowds showed their absolute joy. Having not taken part in the World Cup since 1988, and with Scotland having had a qualifying campaign full of blistering moments, hopes were deservedly high. It was also a good night for Scotland's defence and goalkeeper, with history being made as Angus Gunn became the third Scottish goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet at the World Cup, following David Harvey (twice in 1974) and Jim Leighton (1986). Other group results included a 1-1 draw for Brazil vs Morocco, so that allowed Scotland's result to catapult them to the top of their group with a 2 point lead. Congratulations to the Tartan Army!

It's a bit difficult to get AC outside when you're detailing cars for 3-4 hours at a time π€£ Yes I've been using sunscreen and drinking water by the gallon, and thank you for your concern π
-
@NR_Daddy yes, I understand. The humidity and A/C not being common does make a huge difference. Be sure to take care of yourself though.
-
I didn't take offence to anything. I just thought a bit more of an explanation was necessary because it seems like assumptions were made and the person is relatively new to the site. I love that sarcasm though .... British heat π€£ Nothing like your temps I agree but the humidity being a tiny island by comparison has had it's effects, as well as me having been working in direct sunlight all day. As for pushing hard, it's all part of being self-employed.
-
@NR_DaddyI really don't think any offense/offence was meant. The forum has been having lots of trouble lately (no one's fault). I do hope you're getting rest and not pushing yourself too hard. Especially, in the British "heat".
-
Just for accuracy, The Isle of Man is not actually part of the UK as it is a self-governing crown dependency, with it's own parliament and laws. Just an FYI .... The forums have had issues recently and has been very difficult to get on to. It's also the case that this Club is probably one of the most recently set up clubs on the site. Add to the fact that Brits are famously one of the most reserved types of people, and when you add a taboo subject to people who are already shy then it's even harder to coax people out of their shell. It's not for want of trying though. I created the club as people said they wanted it in a poll, tried out a few topics to start with, but was mindful of trying to push people beyond their comfort zone. That would be a bit over-bearing. It's simply better to have this place here for people if and when they want to use it. Personally I have had real life issues to deal with as well as not being able to get on the forum. My business is at it's peak in warmer months so I seldom have time to get online after a long day, and I'm sure other people have their reasons too.

I was wondering if anyone had an area of the UK or Britain that they particularly like? For me, it has to be the mountains of Scotland, Wales and even the more rugged parts of England, such as the Lake District, the Pennines and the Peak District, as well as the Yorkshire Moors, although there is also much beauty along the coast too, especially Northern Ireland and Scotland. I also love the beautiful forests that still remain here, such as Grizedale, Kielder, Cannock Chase, Brechfa, Hafren and Clun.

Without looking them up, can you tell which of these British place names are real or fake? Bell End Butthole Lane Cockermouth Fanny Barks Fingeringhoe Lickey End Penistone Scratch Arse Ware Shitterton Twatt Wetwang Wyre Piddle

Seeing as this is Brit Chat.... how about some British cartoons from back in the day... Danger Mouse Count Duckula Or The Snowman

Well it's the end of another season, and quite an eventful one it has been. There is only one European final left to go ... the Champions League final on Saturday. Well done to the teams who had success, and it's going to be a record 9 teams in European competition next year. It really shows that the Premier League is Europe's elite domestic league, and one that many players aspire to compete in.

Daddy says instant coffee is probably more of a thing here because of everyone having a kettle.

Rest assured, I wouldn't base my opinion of America or Americans on the actions of a relative few. π Many good things have come out of your country.
-
@Tendillo haha! No you didn't mansplain anything. I know how America and Americans look these days. Always better to keep things clear and make sure you learned things correctly.
-
Thank you @MissNMTX I did worry afterwards that I'd been guilty of 'mansplaining' but, honestly, these semantics confuse many of us here so I made the false assumption that I should try to tell you what you so obviously already know. Apologies for that. My father's side of the family is from the north of Wales, although I was born and raised in "Ingurland" as the footy fans might be chanting during the upcoming World Cup. I agree that Wales has often been unfairly overshadowed in the past, although there have been significant attempts in recent years to reclaim and re-establish the culture, if not the Welsh language itself. π«’ Like you, I'm a fan of the many and varied accents and distinctive dialects found on these shores, and this nation is (these nations are) rich in symbolism and often dark history. Yes, you sound like a total nerd πand you could probably teach me lots of things I don't know about this country too. I'm always open to learning new stuff.
-
@Tendillo Honestly, I love all of it. Obviously, London, Dublin, and Edinburgh are the places of my dreams! My surname is Welsh(as is Henry Cavill) so if course I love Wales. It does tend to get overshadowed though. My Mother's side is from the lowlands of Scotland, just outside Edinburgh. We know all our clan info in such. Obviously, I'm just a nerd who's obsessed with all of this! All of the history and culture, tradition. I just really loved it.... symbols, accents . Oh gosh now I'm needing out!! Thank you for the semantics lesson. I think I knew most of what you mentioned, but best to be properly schooled. Oh! And I think the Isle of Wright is such an example of English beauty. And Queen Victoria's vacation spot. I'm a bit of a monarchist also.

I hadn't heard about that hotel before. Apparently "the hand drawn caricatures by John Lydon, aka Johnny Rotten, led to the building being upgraded from Grade II to the prestigious Grade II* listed status by Historic England" What sparked your Anglophilia? Is it England in particular, or a broader interest in Britain? I see in your profile that you also express a liking for Scotland and Ireland (but not for Wales?). Of course, Ireland itself has a long and ... complex, shall we say... history with Britain, but with England especially. Which parts of England do you know of, or interest you the most? I would be happy to (attempt to) answer any questions you may have. For clarity, Britain or Great Britain (GB) refers to the main island that comprises England, Scotland and Wales. The UK refers to GB and Northern Ireland (I won't go into the politics of all that here), which comprises six of the 32 counties on the island of Ireland. The UK also encompasses many smaller islands (eg Isle of Man, Isle of Wight, The Hebrides, The Northern Isles of Shetland and Orkney). These islands are all a part of the 'British Isles' which also confusingly refers to Ireland (!), which is not a part of Britain...... As you can see... some of these terms are interchangeable and can be misleading, but I blame the British (or more correctly the English) for throwing their weight around over the years and greatly oppressing their near neighbours. (Let's not even start on the British Empire or else I'll never shut up) π€ͺ Sorry, I know I said 'for clarity' but these islands have a long and often difficult history, still felt in many parts of the world. If you made it to the end, thanks for reading, and if you fell asleep, then I don't blame you π
-
@Tendillo Fair thought, but the season just ended..I think it's mainly just because I really am a huge Anglophile and I'm always watching... cultural things, restaurants, hotels, tourist things. Did you know they turned the house the Sex Pistols used to leave in into a high end hotel. Would be awesome for a stag party or the like. I bet it picks back up during the World Cup. Even though there's already a thread for that.
-
Thank you for the heads up @MissNMTX (Are we the only one who bother with this club, now the football season is finished over here? π)
-
@Tendillo I have seen that blog. I watch many of them. Today is a new episode of "Palace Confidential"
