Hiya!

So my doctor has suggested I go on a high-protein diet because they think it will help me recover quicker from a surgery I had. I've never had to go on a high-protein diet before so I'm just looking to see if anyone has any tips or recipes that could be useful.

Hiya!

So my doctor has suggested I go on a high-protein diet because they think it will help me recover quicker from a surgery I had. I've never had to go on a high-protein diet before so I'm just looking to see if anyone has any tips or recipes that could be useful.

I try to maintain around 170 grams of protein a day so I'm pretty familiar with this.

Foods that will give you the most are seafood, poultry, red meats, and eggs. Some great dairy sources are greek yogurt and cheese.

If you prefer a plant-based diet I don't have much experience in that area. Some foods that I'm aware of are tofu, lentils, chickpeas, almonds, beans, rice, and potatoes.

If you like fruit smoothies a good way to get at least 20 grams of protein is by adding protein powder to a smoothie.

Protein drinks and protein bars are also great sources for something quick.

Here are some recipes I like that are high in protein:

One-Pot Chicken Enchilada Rice . SFW https://www.foodforfitness.co.uk/recipes/one-pot-chicken-enchilada-rice/

Baked Salmon with avocado Salsa SFW https://www.joyfulhealthyeats.com/paleo-baked-salmon-with-avocado-salsa/

Frittata with Pancetta and Potatoes SFW https://www.menshealth.com/nutrition/a19525543/eat-a-protein-packed-breakfast-any-day-of-the-week/

Open Steak Sandwich with Broccoli Tapenade and Zucchini SFW https://kitchen.nine.com.au/2016/09/19/13/23/open-steak-sandwich-with-broccoli-tapenade-and-zucchini

Greek Yogurt and Berry Parfait SFW https://www.eatthismuch.com/recipe/view/greek-yogurt-and-berry-parfait,412923/

This is a good list of 10 high protein meal prep lunch options SFW https://www.mensjournal.com/food-drink/10-high-protein-meal-prep-lunches-you-can-eat-your-desk/

High protein diets are very common. If you want really simple meals or meals that don't need to be cooked just google it and you'll see several great options. I also recommend searching "high-protein meal prep"  if you'd like to prep several meals for the week.

This is all great, Rev! Thank you!

I do like to drink protein drinks. I used to get a peanut butter and banana protein drink when I went to the gym. Do you have any recommendations for a protein powder? I've tried Muscle Milk protein in the past and was not a fan of it.

Also, all of those recipes sound great. I'm a big fan of crock pot cooking and I've found a lot of recipes I'm going to have to try. I also tend to make a lot more than I need so that I have lunches/dinners for the following days. That's about as close to meal prepping I'll get.

You're welcome.

I didn't like Muscle Milk either. I've tried several. The best tasting one I've had with the least amount of aftertaste is Syntha-6. I've had their vanilla and chocolate. Both were pretty good compared to other brands I've tried.

Did he tell you how much more to eat? The recommended amount of protein for a women is 46 grams per day and 71 for pregnant women. It's really easy to get more than that from food alone, but if you get full easily like I do it's easier to drink shakes.

-Bean burritos. If you get the beans from the can its 21 grams and then eat it with a side of rice making the meal 40 grams. Bean burritos+ Mexican rice and a can of black beans in the rice= 62 grams a meal

-1 cup of lentils is 40 grams and I usually eat it with plant-based butter, soy sauce, spinach, and cherry tomatoes. 47 grams a meal

-A bowl (2 cups) of oatmeal is 20 grams and topping it with nuts and seeds makes it around 35 grams.

There are 2 protein shakes I go to and its peanut butter/chocolate/banana or blueberry flavoured. Most protein powder is 20-25 grams per scoop. I use the EAS vanilla or chocolate and it has a clean taste to it.

Blueberry muffin shake / 40 grams: 1 cup oats, handful of wild frozen blueberries, cinnamon, pinch of salt, vanilla protein powder, liquid of your choice (16 grams, 2 cups= soy milk or real milk), if you want to make it sweeter use coffee creamer.

Peanut chocolate banana shake / 50 grams: 2 frozen bananas, 1 cup of oats, chocolate protein powder, 2 tsp of peanut butter. They get really thick with the oats so it's best to drink in the 1st hour.

Fruit smoothies are good too with seeds or spinach but it won't be as high in protein. Probably 20 grams at most depending on how much you use. It's probably best to space out protein intake throughout the day because we can only digest a certain amount every time we eat. I hope you heal quickly and get well soon!

No, they didn't. They just told me to try a high-protein diet. I've really only been eating one meal a day since my surgery. I just haven't gotten my appetite back yet. I'm hoping once I start back at school, I'll work up more of an appetite. But thanks for letting me know the proper amounts.

Those bean burritos sound delicious. There are so many new recipes I'll have to try. And the blueberry muffin shake sounds amazing as well.

I know I've asked Rev this, but do you have any protein mix recommendations? I've only tried Muscle Milk and I wasn't a big fan.

I don't really have a lot of experience with protein powder. I think almost all I tried taste yucky to me. I have tried the Muscle Milk, Garden of Life, some pea protein, and EAS.  Garden of Life is good if you are trying to be healthy. It has over 44 superfoods and 1g of sugar, but it is $23. So I just go with EAS because it's $9 and tastes better than the other ones I've tried. Next time you go to the store also look for protein bars and cookies. Sometimes I get the Lenny & Larry's Complete Cookie because I don't have much of an appetite and its a easy way to get calories and protein in. Have a look around and there should be plenty of protein powders and snacks.  :)

I've had the KIND protein bars before and personally wasn't a big fan. I'm not much of a sweets person. I like the Nature Valley and Fiber One protein bars though. And as for protein powder, I used to get them a lot at the gym I had gone to but I never payed attention to what protein powder they used. Wish I would have. But I plan on running to the store tomorrow so I'll have to see what they have to offer. Thanks for the advice!

Well you've already received awesome tips so there's not much to add.

When it comes to high protein diets, they tend to dehydrate the organism so make sure you're drinking enough fluids, I would recommend tea because they tend to have antioxidants which help clear out the acidic residue that's left from protein digestion. Also vitamin c.

I did not know it dehydrates you. Thank you for letting me know ( I struggle as it is to stay hydrated). And I already drink a tea or two every few days and take a multi-vitamin.

You are so lucky that you can feel full from smoothies! I can't get enough of them and I need to eat solid food

I've been eating high protein diet for years now. For weightless reasons and I can testify it does work. It's a physical adjustment and first, but once your body adjusts. I'd guess your blood sugar levels will be better and maybe your sleep too.

All these recipes look great. There are a ton on Pinterest too. My Dr. Even gives out recipes to help at the holidays. I found a really great brussel sprouts recipe that way. I like to eat jalapeno poppers or stuffed mini bell peppers (cream cheese for the win)

Did the Dr talk to you about substitutes? Stevia for sugar etc( that one has something to do with the receptors on your tongue)

One word of advice, if you live alone, be careful with the califlour things. They can be good even yummy, but in my experience do not reheat well for leftovers.

It can be hard adjusting, but I have every confidence you can do it.

I've been on a high protein diet for 3 months now? I thinks 3 months. I have to get 152g of protein a day, it's really really hard especially at first. First things first starchy carbs tend to fill you up quickly so I cut that and added an extra piece of meat, premiere protein shakes have a high protein one with 30g and they have lots flavors (I hope it's ok to mention the brand name, forgive me if it's not...seems important). At first I was just drinking the shakes in between meals as a snack but I learned if I just drink it with the meals I hit my protein goal everyday!!! Also water! Hydration is important, I drink 100oz a day now, and since I live in Texas I add a hydration supplement to my water for workouts and take your multivitamins! Hope this helps!
