Before I begin this topic; I am not a licensed health professional. I am speaking from my own experiences and research. My goal is to bring awareness to this topic. Thanks~

If you've been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder, particularly if you are a woman/AFAB with a history of childhood trauma due to narcissistic abuse, make sure you do your research and understand exactly what you've been diagnosed with. You could have Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Reasons for the mix up?

  • Symptom crossover
  • Not all doctors are trained in trauma recognition/treatment.
  • CPTSD isn't recognized in The DSM-5 (USA standard).

But it is in the ICD-11 (International: World Health Organization). So, if you suspect a mis/underdiagnoses, it's important to seek out a health professional who specializes in trauma. These two diagnoses can happen at the same time, as well as separately.

It's also important to know that Bipolar often gets over diagnosed. As well as many other diagnoses that are mis/under/over diagnosed. Be aware of your treatment plan. If you're being treated for one thing when you really have something else happening, you're going to hinder your healing process.

Doctors are only people who see you a short amount of time during sessions, therefore, they need your input to know what's going on in your life, your reactions to life, and your inner mind. Lying, being quiet, or being overly dramatic are not a good thing to do at psychiatric/therapy appointments. Be honest and open, but firm in your beliefs with what you're saying. Seek out case management, if you need a little extra help while adulting during these appointments.

Be the biggest advocate in your healing journey by never being afraid to speak up. Your mental wellbeing depends on you alone, but you don't have to heal alone. It's been 9 years since I was originally diagnosed with BPD, but today, I feel like I can finally breath. Regardless of whatever you're diagnosis is or turns out to be, you've got this! I believe in you. ♡
