Posted (edited)

G'day fellow Glowworms, its me Dreamer, one of your resident Aussie's!
Here to tell you all about the badge for May, but before I do I just want to say a huge thank you to @Juju for allowing and trusting me to create the theme and activities for the May badge, it has been so much fun and a much welcomed and needed distraction. I hope I don't let you down with what I have put together!... And now with out further ado, on with the badge...

I am so excited to officially be welcoming you to the Glowworm Guilds Badge for May, the AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE badge!!
This month is all about somewhere very special to me and the place I call home, Australia!!
I hope that with the activities I have put together you will be able to learn something and have fun doing them.

This badge will run from:
May 1st until May 31st.

Our leaders for this month are:
@Daddy Bear 77
@beanbean
@InspireDaddy-( Not Available)
@DaddyRaven

@Very Proud and Happy Daddy( Daddy has volunteered to be a leader this month.

With
@shadowrider  on standby should anyone need a substitute leader.

For this badge I have broken the activities up into 3 Categories which are:
Something to learn
Something do
Something to craft

You will need to complete at least 4 activities to earn this badge, one activity per category and then you can choose the 4th from your favourite. Please don't feel limited to just the 4 though, feel free to do as many as you would like in addition to the 4.
You will also need to ask one of the leaders if they would be happy to help you with this badge and sign off when you complete it before starting.

The activities you can choose from are:

Something to Learn:
Research an Australian animal - I know for this one it is so tempting to do an obvious one, like the Kangaroo or Koala but I encourage you consider choosing a lesser known animal here.

 Create a poster, power point or write a paragraph answering the following questions:
* What area of Australia is it found?
* What type of home does it live in?

* What does it eat?
* What are their babies called?
* What is something fun you learnt about them?

Littles you can draw a picture.

Learn some Aussie slang and write a small paragraph - Aussies have a very unique way of speaking, we shorten things, give nicknames to a nickname and speak in rhyming slang. For this activity learn some Aussie slang and then write a small paragraph, it can be a story or telling us about your day.

Research an Australian urban Legend - Just like everywhere else Australia is no stranger to urban legends, your task here is to research an urban legend from Australia and right a small paragraph about what you learn. Just know, Drop Bears don't count here because those guys are real, despite
what the internet will try to tell you.

Littles you can draw a picture.

Research the history and significance of ANZAC Biscuits, if you can make some - I can't really elaborate on this one with out giving you some of the information, so I will just say that you will need to write about what you learn, don't forget to include photos if you make them and let us know what you think. Here is a photos if you make them and let us know what you think. Here is a  recipe

Something to do:
Australian Literature -
For this activity you will need to read one of the below Australian classic stories and write a report (littles you can draw a picture). If you are not able to find a hard copy of the books, or not wanting to purchase one I have found some YouTube videos where the stories are being read.
* Possum Magic by Mem Fox
*Wombat Stew by Marcia K Vaughn
*Theres A Hippopotamus On Our Roof Eating Cake by Hazel Edwards
Magic Beach by Alison Lester
*Where Is The Green Sheep by Mem Fox
 Don't forget to include in your report your favourite character and part.

Australian Activity Book - This one is the thing I am probably the most proud of that I have put together, It took well over a month and I worked so hard on it, if you would Like to do this as part of your badge you can download it hereNote: It is all slightly off center so if you want to print it you can staple or bind it.
If you would like to do this you will need to request access to be able to download.
A note to leaders, If your Glowworm chooses this, I have an answers book I can send you a link to privately so you can help them out if they need (hints and guidance no outright answers) just let me know or you can feel free to give it a crack yourself

Make some classic Aussie treats and enjoy them at a picnic - Aussies have some world class treats (even if I do say so myself) I have put together a few of my favourites, I have tried to include ones for all little and middle ages, as well as tried to keep them to things I think should be able to be recreated with similar things if the exact thing isn't available.
*Fairy Bread (Round sprinkles only)
*Honey Joys
*Chocolate crackles
*Mars Bar Slice
*Sausage Rolls (This is my recipe of choice for this one)
*Funny Face Biscuits (good one for littles)
Once you have your treats, its time for a picnic, indoors or outdoors is fine, Make as many treats as you want and don't forget to take heaps of photos!

Camp out/Spend time outside - Aussies love the great outdoors, we spend a large majority of our spare time getting out and doing things from camping, to beach days and getting out for a bit of sport, for this activity all you need to do is have a camp out and document it by taking photos and writing a short paragraph, it doesn't matter if you choose to go to a local camp ground or just rough it in the back yard. If you are not able to camp outdoors camp out in the living room after spending a good chunk of time outside during the day.
While you're camping why don't you try your hand at making some Damper

Something to Craft
Make a paper Snake - Australia is famous for having 21 of the 25 most venomous snakes calling it home, for this activity you will have to make your very own paper snake.. but don't worry yours can be friendly, if you need inspiration you can find some here

Make a Cork Hat - Ahh the iconic cork screw hat, its the height of fashion! Please be careful if you choose to do this one as it does involve the use of a drill. if your little is of an age where power tolls are a no no, it is probably best to get help from you CG if you can or prep to make it outside of little space, here is a video tutorial

Make a paper Plate Aussie Animal - Well we may have some of the deadliest animals, we also have some of the cutest, for this activity your task is to make an A animal using paper plates as your base, you can find inspiration here

Make Aussie Animal Trading cards (Minimum 6) - In this activity you are going to be designing your own trading cards using the creatures of Australia. Each animal will need to have an 2 attacks, a defense and health points. If you want I have done a template

Alright now that is all the activities you can choose from, If you want to make any edits to them or do something else instead of one of these activities, please check with me before doing it, some activities you may find online may not be ones that are considered ok to do anymore.

Now who wants to see the badge!!

Unfortunately there is no purchase link for this one as I created it with the help of AI (I know how some people feel about AI, but unfortunately my drawing tablet is well a little shattered right now so I couldn't draw things myself) If you would like to purchase a physical badge I was able to find this one here

That is all from me for now, I truly hope you enjoy doing this badge! If you need any help with anything please feel free to reach out!

@SweetLittleDreamer, thank you so very much for creating this! I am so looking forward to working in it!

As you will notice, I've fixed your paragraphs for you. Just putting them together so they're not separated.

Also, I've added a few more leaders to the list!

Thank you again!!

I’m starting to think that the formatting of this post just doesn’t want to behave, if it looks good on laptop/computer it looks funny on phone. I don’t know what’s causing it though.
Thanks for seeing if you can get it fixed!

You’re so welcome for me putting it together. I was genuinely so fun especially making the activity book!

Here’s a story nobody asked for… when I created the answer book for the activity book I had left it so long between making some of the activities and doing them that I felt like I was doing them for the first time!

I'm sorry but I can't be a Leader this month. It looks like an amazing badge and I would love to learn all about Australia be reading what I know will be lots of fantastic work, but I need to take a little break. I will check back in to see if any of my existing Glow Worms finish their current badges and I hope you all have an amazing time working on this one.

Hey @BabyPoppy if you haven’t, send an access request. My phone & laptop share the same charger my phone needs 10 to 15 minutes more charging but once it’s charged I’ll plug my laptop in and accept it. So in like 30 minutes.

@DaddyRaven Would you be willing to sign off on my badges this month?

I am looking at doing the Aussie, Aussie badge, Dino Badge, and May day badge. If I get extra i might try Mother Goose, but that seems like a lot.

Aussie badge activities:
Something to learn = Australian Urban Legend – show research – cannot be drop bears

Something to do = Ausse Treats picnic (This is a bit harder for me as I have Celiac, but I want to try)–

Chocolate Crackles   https://www.kelloggs.com.au/en_AU/recipes/chocolate-crackles.html

               Fairy Bread  https://www.sweetestmenu.com/fairy-bread/

               Mars Bar Slice  https://www.sweetestmenu.com/mars-bar-slice/

Something to Craft = Make a paper Snake

Extra – Either Australian Activity book or There’s a Hippopotamus on Our Roof Eating Cake

AMAZING choice of story for the potential extra option! It is actually one of my favourites & why it was included. It reminds me of being at my grandparents snuggled on the couch or being tucked into bed well one of them read it to me for the 15th thousandth time that visit.
Remember you can do both options if you have the time, and even if it’s just for fun you can still download & do the activity book whenever you want even if it’s in like 2 months time.

can’t wait to see what you think of those yummy treats!!! (If you need help with modified recipes let me know I have a friend that is celiac that loves to make chocolate crackles!).
I also can’t wait to see what urban legend you  pick, and to meet the new species of snake you discover.

That’s ok, having the advantage doesn’t matter. Just pick what sounds fun.
