August 12 is World Elephant Day and I know some of my friends here have a deep love for these amazing animals, so I wrote a badge just for you!

Please choose 3 - 4 activities on this list and post them for your leader to sign off! This Badge is due the end of August.

-          Learn 5 facts about elephants and share what you learn

-          Color or paint an elephant

-          Make an elephant craft using paper plates or handprints

-          Watch a documentary or educational video about elephants and write a paragraph on what you learn.

-           Compare African and Asian elephants

-          Draw an elephant family or color a picture of an elephant

-          Donate to or learn about an elephant conservation organization

What a beautiful elephant picture you colored, @MissAnna!  Your compare and contrast between African and Asian elephants was delightful to read! And that documentary sounds like something you really learned from! Yes! I will sign off that you have a completed this badge! Way to go!

African Elephants vs. Asian Elephants
African and Asian elephants are both intelligent, social, and fascinating animals, but there are several important differences between them.
African elephants are generally larger and have much bigger ears, which are shaped somewhat like the African continent. Both male and female African elephants can have tusks. They also tend to live in a variety of habitats, including savannas, forests, and grasslands.
Asian elephants are generally smaller and have smaller, rounded ears. Their heads have a distinctive double-domed shape, while African elephants have more rounded heads. Usually, only male Asian elephants develop large tusks, although some females can have small tusks called tushes. Asian elephants are commonly found in forests and grasslands throughout parts of Asia.
Both species are highly intelligent and live in close family groups. They communicate through sounds, body language, and even vibrations through the ground. Despite their differences, African and Asian elephants are both important parts of their ecosystems and need protection from habitat loss and other threats.
In short, African elephants are generally larger with bigger ears, while Asian elephants are smaller with rounded ears and a different head shape. 🐘

And the documentary i watched last week: The Elephant Whisperers is a beautiful Netflix documentary about Bomman and Bellie, a couple in South India who dedicate their lives to caring for two orphaned elephant calves, Raghu and Ammu. The documentary shows the deep bond that develops between the humans and elephants as they grow together, while also highlighting the importance of compassion, family, and protecting wildlife. It is a touching story that reminds us that love and connection can exist between species in the most unexpected ways.
