Trees Trees Everywhere!!!

Trees bring so much joy to the world. They rest all winter and then come alive in the spring and summer, then they change the most beautiful colors in the fall! Trees give us beauty, shade, protection, food, homes for sooo many animals and, when they are old and ready to move on, they give us such things as paper, houses, buildings, and fences.

This month we are going to learn about trees! All types of trees… even those pokey ones who have cones and stay green all year long!

Please try to do 3 – 5 activities from the list below! Feel free to do more if you would like!!! If you have other ideas, please reach out! This is to be a fun activity!

Learn About Trees

• Learn the basic parts of a tree: roots, trunk, bark, branches, leaves, flowers, fruit, and seeds.
• Learn how trees grow from tiny seeds into huge trees.
• Discover how trees help people, animals, and our planet.
• Learn the difference between deciduous and evergreen trees.
• Pick 3 different kinds of trees and learn how to identify them.
• Count the rings in a picture or real tree stump and learn what tree rings can tell us.
• Learn about one unusually old, tall, or famous tree somewhere in the world.

 

Explore

• Go on a tree walk and see how many different trees you can find.
• Collect fallen leaves and try to identify which trees they came from.
• Do a bark rubbing with paper and crayons.
• Find a tree and give it a hug! See how far your arms reach around its trunk.
• Look for things living on, in, or around a tree—birds, squirrels, insects, moss, fungi, nests, etc.
• Choose one special tree and visit it several times during the month. Draw or photograph how it changes.

 

Create

• Make leaf rubbings.
• Paint or draw a tree during your favorite season.
• Make a tree using handprints, fingerprints, paper, yarn, or other craft supplies.
• Use fallen leaves, twigs, seeds, or pinecones to make nature art.
• Create a Four Seasons Tree showing the same tree in spring, summer, autumn, and winter.
• Write a story about a magical tree or the creatures that live inside one.

 

Care for Trees

• Plant a tree or tree seed if you have a suitable place.
• Water a young tree with an adult's permission.
• Pick up litter around trees at a park, yard, or neighborhood.
• Learn why we shouldn't break living branches or peel bark from trees.
• Find out how using and recycling paper affects trees.

 

Bonus Challenge: Find the biggest or oldest tree you can in your neighborhood or community. Measure around its trunk and take a picture or draw it!
